Vehicle title questions

Transfer deadlines, electronic titles, what to bring and lost titles.

A title proves who owns a vehicle. Whenever a vehicle changes hands, the title has to move into the new owner's name.

How long do I have to transfer a title after I buy a vehicle?

Two months from the date you take ownership. Since September 1, 2024, vehicles bought in Oklahoma also have to be pre-registered within two business days of the sale, with a metal plate and pre-registration decals on the vehicle within ten days. Our guide to buying a car from a private seller covers each step.

Oklahoma titles are electronic now. What does that mean for me?

Since July 1, 2025, Oklahoma can issue titles electronically, with the State keeping the ownership record instead of a paper title. A paper title you already have stays valid until the vehicle's next title transaction, like a sale. The change didn't raise title or registration fees.

You can still ask for a paper title when there's no lien on the vehicle, after a loan is paid off, or when you need one to move or sell out of state.

Buying from a dealership? The dealer hands you a paper title, but the title made after your transfer may be electronic, depending on whether there's a lien.

What do I bring to transfer an Oklahoma title into my name?

  • The Oklahoma title, signed over to you and notarized (or Form 718, the bill of sale for an electronic title)
  • Your driver license
  • Proof of Oklahoma insurance
  • A lien release, if a lien in the seller's name is still on the title

The Oklahoma title has spaces for the sale price and the odometer reading, so you usually don't need a separate bill of sale or Form 729. If the price isn't written down anywhere, Form 722-1 declares it. There's no need to print or fill out forms before you come in, since we can usually print them at the office. All of them are on our forms page too.

Who holds the title if I have a car loan?

Your lender does. Oklahoma is a title-holding state, so while a lien is active the lienholder holds the title. When the loan is paid off, the lender provides a lien release, and the lien stays on the State's record until that release is turned in. Once you have the release, bring it in with your driver license and you can pay for a duplicate title to be mailed to you.

I lost my title. How do I get a replacement?

Fill out Form 701-7, the application for a duplicate title, and have the owner's signature notarized. Bring it with the VIN, your current decal number and your current Oklahoma registration. The State's fee is $11 for a vehicle title, and the replacement is mailed to you; it can't be picked up in person. Need a notary? We offer notary service at our office.

What if the owner of the vehicle passed away?

It depends on the estate. If the will went through probate, bring the letters testamentary from the court and a copy of the death certificate. If the estate is under $50,000 and the will leaves you the vehicle by name and VIN, you can use Form 405, the Small Estate Affidavit, without probate. Call us at (918) 438-2198 and we'll help you figure out which applies.
