Fees and late penalty questions
Registration fees by vehicle age, the grace period, late penalties and exemptions.
These are the State of Oklahoma's fees, checked in September 2026. Your final total is calculated when you pay, and the State can change its fees.
How much does it cost to renew my tag?
What a car, truck or SUV costs to register each year depends on its registration year:
| Registration year | Yearly cost |
|---|---|
| 1st to 4th year | $97.50 |
| 5th to 8th year | $87.50 |
| 9th to 12th year | $67.50 |
| 13th to 16th year | $47.50 |
| 17th year and up | $27.50 |
These amounts include the $1.50 insurance fee the State adds to every registration. Motorcycles cost $3 more in each bracket.
Is there a grace period if I renew late?
Yes. When you renew, you have a 30-day grace period after your registration expires. After that, a penalty starts at $1 a day for most vehicles, up to $100. By law, penalties can't be waived, even if you never got a renewal notice. Our guide to late tag renewal has the details.
How long do I have to register a vehicle I just bought?
Two months from the date of sale before penalties apply. Vehicles bought in Oklahoma since September 1, 2024 also need to be pre-registered within two business days of the sale.
What other fees might I pay when I title a vehicle?
- Title fee: $11
- Transfer fee: $17
- VIN inspection, for vehicles with an out-of-state or tribal title: $4
- Excise tax, based on the vehicle's value
Service Oklahoma's Sales & Excise Tax Calculator, linked from its fees page (opens in a new tab), gives you an estimate of the excise tax.
Can I avoid paying excise tax?
There are dozens of exemptions, and most are rare. Some examples:
- A vehicle given, not sold, between parents and children or between spouses (Form 794, the Family Affidavit)
- A vehicle awarded to a former spouse in a divorce decree that lists its VIN
- Transfers between a trust and its trustee
- Removing a name from a title (adding a name is taxed)
- One vehicle every three years for 100% disabled veterans
Bring the paperwork that proves the exemption. If you're not sure it applies, call us at (918) 438-2198 first.
