REAL ID and driver license questions

Who needs a REAL ID, the documents, fees and license renewals.

Do I need a REAL ID?

Only if you want to use your license to fly within the U.S. or to enter places like military bases and some federal buildings. Since May 7, 2025, those require a REAL ID or another accepted ID, such as a U.S. passport. You don't need a REAL ID to drive, vote, go to the post office or receive federal benefits.

How can I tell if my license is already a REAL ID?

A REAL ID has a star in the top right corner. A license without the star may say "Not for REAL ID purposes." It's still valid for driving and ID, just not for federal purposes like boarding a flight.

What documents do I need?

For U.S. citizens, the documents are:

  • One proof of identity: a birth certificate (not a hospital certificate) or a U.S. passport
  • Two proofs of Oklahoma residency, like a utility bill or a credit card statement
  • Your Social Security number (the card isn't required)
  • Documents for every name change since birth, such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree

Not a U.S. citizen? Permanent residents and other non-citizens need somewhat different documents. Service Oklahoma's online REAL ID checklist (opens in a new tab) covers every case, exceptions included, and builds a personal list for you. Our REAL ID guide explains each document.

Can I get my REAL ID at your office?

Yes, if you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident: Licensed Operators like us can issue a REAL ID. Your first REAL ID has to be done in person; after that you can renew it online. If you're under 18, bring a parent or legal guardian.

How long does it take to get my REAL ID?

The card comes by mail, usually in about three weeks. You'll leave with a paper temporary, but TSA doesn't accept it for flying, so apply at least four weeks before a trip.

What does a driver license cost?

Credential4 years8 years
Driver license renewal$38.50$77
State ID renewal$25$50
Replacement license or ID$25$25

Oklahomans 65 and older get a driver license or state ID for free (CDLs aren't included). Adding a motorcycle endorsement for the first time adds $4.

Can I renew my license online?

Usually, if you're a U.S. citizen with a valid Oklahoma address, your license isn't suspended, and it hasn't been expired for more than three years. You can't get your first REAL ID or change your name online. You can renew up to a year early, and Service Oklahoma suggests renewing at least 60 days before your license expires.
