Boat and outboard motor questions

What needs registering, the June deadline, fees and renewing online.

Does my boat need to be registered?

Motorized boats need a title and registration, and so do canoes, kayaks and paddleboats powered by anything other than people. Hand-powered canoes, kayaks and paddleboats don't have to be registered, though you can if you want to. Outboard motors over 10 horsepower are titled and registered separately from the boat.

When do boat registrations expire?

Every Oklahoma boat and motor registration expires at the end of June, so renew by July 1. You can register for one year or three. If you register partway through the year, the fee may be prorated.

Can I renew my boat online?

What does it cost to register a boat?

In the first year, it's $1 for the first $150 of value plus $1 for each $100 above that. Each year after, the fee is 90% of the year before, until it levels off in year 11. State law caps the fee at $151. A boat or motor title is $2.25.

I just bought a used boat. What do I bring?

  • Form BM-26, the application for a boat or motor title
  • The title signed over to you and notarized, or the seller's out-of-state paperwork
  • Form BM-10, the serial number confirmation, completed by the seller

No BM-10? A Licensed Operator can inspect the hull identification number and note it on the back of your BM-26. Boats have to be titled, registered and taxed within 30 days of when you bought them. Both forms are on our forms page.

Do I need to keep the registration on the boat?

Yes. Carry the current registration in the boat whenever it's out on the water, and make sure the current decal is attached to the boat. With your first renewal after November 1, 2023, you'll also get a carbon monoxide warning decal (Andy's Law) that goes inside the boat where it's easy to see.
